RL: Who are you, where are you from, and what is your (current) role in life?
SG: I am Marcus Eccleston professionally known as Swoosh God. Although born on U.S. soil, I grew up in Valley Stream, Long Island, with both parents being Jamaican. I am from Jamaica, and my current role in life is to lead my family and people by example.
RL: In 2019, I read you took a phone call from Kevin Durant… how does having relationships with a pro athlete affect your music and day to day life?
SG: Having a relationship with a pro athlete who is great at his craft such as Kevin Durant has extremely beneficial affects on how to go about your craft in order to be great at what you do as well.
RL: The Ends Music & Ent interview referenced you having a relationship to the sneaker community, name 5 to 10 of your favorite kicks. I’m a sneaker head myself and used to flip them before StockX.
SG: My 5 to 10 favorite sneakers are based on what I experienced through childhood and their is no specific order. I’m gonna start off with Jordans in general, no certain pair. Number 2: Because of what Run-D.M.C. did with them and what it did for Hip-Hop, I can’t leave out the Shell Toe Adidas’s! Number 3: The Air Penny Hardaway 3’s. Number 4: Air Tech Challengers. Number 5: all Yeezys with Nike/Adidas. Number 6: all Virgils with Nike. Number 7: Tie between Charles Barkley and Foamposites. Number 8: all SB Dunks High, Mids, and Lows. Number 9: all Air Force Ones, again High, Mids, and Lows. Number 10: I’d say all variations of the Air-Max.
RL: It was mentioned that StockX and you had a partnership, titled “ 7 Days of Swoosh God ” in 2019. A Christmas giveaway with 7 lucky winners having the opportunity to win the hottest sneakers. How did this come about & how does that make you feel that you can have a collaboration with the biggest middle man in the sneaker/clothing game?
SG: That collab came about through my manager at the time. A really great fellow named @qwehlo. To be honest in that moment I wasn’t really conscious or present in the blessings I received. Now that you I ask, I think I’m truly honored.
RL: Where does the name “Swoosh God” come from?
SG: The name Swoosh God stems from me working at Nike Roosevelt Field Mall, which is now permanently closed. At the same time Drake released “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late”, with a track titled “6 God.” There’s a thing called a “shoe check” which I loved doing because you get to see all of the store inventory and memorize where things are. I did it pretty quickly and efficiently, which led my coworker Danny (@d_breezus) to call me “Swoosh God”. I love Danny forever for that.
RL: Has Nike ever reached out to you? You've been doing great PR work for them.
SG: Nike had reached out once for me to be on a Neymar mixtape in 2017 and for Air-Max Day in 2018.
RL: Who is your favorite basketball player, how have they affected your life & your music career?
SG: Kobe Bryant is my favorite basketball player and his Mamba Mentality which I have tattooed. It’s extremely important to me and how I go about life.
RL: You went on tour with Playboi Carti before he came the platinum Playboi Carti, I’m curious how that makes you feel about your life and your future in the music industry?
SG: Being on tour with Carti was a great experience. How it makes me feel about life and my future in the music industry is being who I am and its always been more than enough.
RL: I read you had an NBA2K20 song for the game's soundtrack, what did that feel like? Did you play the game more knowing you were a part of the sounds?
SG: Being on a 2K soundtrack was a dream come true, and the overall gameplay of the game was on the decline around that time, so I didn’t play the game more.
RL: Juicy J, Lil Uzi Vert, Rich The Kid, & Famous Dex. What did working them teach you? Especially at the time that rap music was very on top. Do you still keep in touch with them?
SG: Working with all of them taught me that the rap game needs me. And no, I don’t keep in touch with any of them.
RL: You recently dropped an EP titled “Swoosher Vandross” and continue to release a lot of music, more than a lot of musicians…
SG: Majority of people consider themselves a human being… I consider myself a music being.
RL: Who is your favorite musician? Name as many as you see fit.
SG: Wiz khalifa, Luciano, Tems, Nipsey Hussle are some of my favorites that come to mind at the moment.
RL: What is your favorite film? Director?
SG: There are several films I love. I do not have a favorite director.
RL: Tell me a story about an individual related to the music industry that inspired you or motivated you.
SG: One story that motivated me is when YG Addie told me that “sometimes you have to get on a song with someone just to show the world how much you’re better than them.”
RL: Are you into fashion? Have you ever been to a fashion show?
SG: I’d say I’m into always being myself and looking presentable. I’ve been blessed to attend a good amount of fashion shows would love to attend more.
RL: There’s this brand called “YouveBeenStarStruk”, which you created. Can you tell me more about it and what it means to you? What are you trying (going) to accomplish with it?
SG: YouveBeenStarStruk means so much to me. It’s my baby, and I love it so much. It helps me use my mind in so many creative ways, and it aligns me with so many kind, loving, and creative people. What I’m going to accomplish remains unknown until it happens, because not even I know exactly what heights it will reach.
RL: What is your favorite studio to record in? What helps you create the best sound, song?
SG: My favorite studio I’ve recorded in so far would have to be Westlake in L.A., which has Michael Jackson memorabilia.. you can feel his energy. But I love the home/on-the-go studio more than anything. Also, having the correct engineer plus great vibes is what helps me make the best song.
RL: Who are some of your favorite producers to work with? Who do you want to work with?
SG: Even though we haven’t officially released a song together yet, I absolutely love being in the studio with Pierre Bourne. I’m truly grateful to have worked with CardoGotWings. At the same time, I love all producers I’ve worked with, and I’m looking forward to working with whoever I align with.
RL: Where do you see yourself in a year? Five years?
SG: In a year, I see myself busy with music, StarStruk, other businesses, creative activities, and continuing to show up day in and day out to help myself and my community. In five years, I see myself being a husband and father.
RL: Anything you want to tell the people reading this, something inspiring to end of our talk?
SG: What I want to tell anyone reading this is give more love to yourself and the rest of the world. Read and exercise more, all the answers are within. Most importantly; don’t spend time where you don’t align.
