Interview conducted on August 14, 2026
RL: Who is GettyImagesFanClub?
SP: My name is Saul :)
RL: What was your first remembrance of seeing an image with a GettyImages watermark?
SP: I don’t know, but I remember seeing all these amazing images I'd never seen before and wishing they didn't have the watermark on them. Then when I decided to start my Instagram to chronicle my finds, I just leant into the watermark and it grew on me and now I love it!
RL: You’re considered a daily ritual on Instagram, how does that make you feel and do you believe it is limiting to what you know and how much you research?
SP: I don't really see it that way. If I did I would feel too much pressure. I try to post for my own enjoyment first and if other people love it then great. Sometimes out of boredom I will post something I'm unsure about and then if people aren't moved by it then I'll be like okay I'll delete. But I try not to do that and only post when I am personally excited about it and even if it doesn't do well in likes or whatever, then at least I've pleased myself. That's my goal but don't I always do that.
RL: SSense spotlighted you at (70K in November 2024) followers, I believe we connected around 20K – what has changed since then (109K in August 2026) as far as your perspective, pop culture, and your future?
SP: I work on a lot more research and creative consulting projects outside of my Instagram now. It means I have a lot less time to hunt and do deep dives. I really want to make more time for intentional deep research for my own pleasure because I love searching with no particular objective. Just pursuing any whim that presents itself. I love being hired for research but my favourite is researching with no brief. Just having fun discovering things.
RL: Founding the page in 2022, what made you delve into researching GettyImages and combing through their archives, curating a page solely with timeless images that are difficult to find easily.
SP: There was just so much content and moments waiting to be discovered and celebrated. Images you couldn't find anywhere else. Images you couldn't find with a simple google images search.
RL: Have you gotten any recognition from them? Celebrities, photographers, artists, musicians, etc.
SP: Yes! Kind of. The Getty Images Instagram follows my account, so I kinda see that as like them saying ok I see you. I was super excited! My most fave follow from someone I have admired for a long time is Chloë Sevigny. I think I checked for like a month if she had changed her mind and unfollowed me lol
RL: You’ve worked with Family Style magazine (shout out Joshua Glass), tallying stories of Damien Hirst’s restaurant, Gianni Versace parties, Marc Jacobs Christmas parties, the burgers consumed after an Award show, and a convo between Jay-Z and Nicole Kidman at the ‘05 Vanity Fair Party - it’s incredible that you can research and find out so much knowledge!
SP: If I see an image I like I usually will look at the rest of the images from that event and you usually discover heaps more iconic images!
RL: How does it make you feel that published magazines are reaching out to you for insight?
SP: Very flattered. It doesn't feel real. I always get nervous before we have meetings. I always try to lower expectation before a meeting and think oh if nothing comes of this at least they've reached out!
RL: If you could work with any magazine, it doesn't have to be fashion, who would it be and why?
SP: I would also need a Time Machine for this hypothetical scenario. Dutch Magazine!!!!!
RL: Name some of your favorite fashion designers who you enjoy uncovering their past?
SP: Helmut Lang. when you think you've understood his clothes and what's going on, you always notice a detail you have never noticed before. He's the master!!!! I'm not sure if there will ever be a designer who can come close to what he did for a label. I'm yet to see the same magic at Helmut Lang since he left.
RL: Where do you believe your instagram page is headed in the next year or two years? Are there other niche pages you’re working on or thinking of creating?
SP: I'm not sure. I haven't thought about it. But I have some projects I'm working on currently. I can't announce anything yet but I can tell you off the record if you like haha
RL: Last question is if you have advice to people reading this trying to get into fashion, pop culture within the internet? Maybe not even on the internet. Where do you suggest they start?
SP: I would say just start! Things don't have to be perfect! I wanted to initially start my instagram in 2020, I didn't start it until 2022 when I lost my job and had heaps of free time. I would say find a community of people who share your passions. That is one of the greatest things about the internet and connectedness and access we have with each other. I've connected with so many people I admire just over shared interests. Your people are out there!
